Porsche Boxster

Pros
The 2011 Porsche Boxster is a true standout in the market-a mid-engine sports car that can hold its own on the track, yet be reasonably comfortable as a touring car with solid fuel economy. The Boxster's steering and handling are praised far and wide as among the best of any vehicle, while its good seats and flexible engines make it just as much at home on the commute as the track. This year, the new Spyder now appeases those who want an even leaner Boxster that makes some sacrifices but is focused entirely toward lap times and driving feel.
Model Highlights
The Boxster is powered by a 255-horsepower, 2.9L horizontally opposed 'boxer' 6-cylinder engine, while the Boxster S gets a 3.4L version with direct injection, making 310 hp. Both engines have variable valve timing, and performance is impressive with either choice. In either case, the Boxster comes with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox, while a 7-speed PDK double-clutch automated manual gearbox is available, providing shifts that are faster than even a professional driver could manage. The base Boxster can get to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds (5.5 with the PDK), while the Boxster S can make that dash in 5.0 seconds. Top speed for the Boxster S runs as high as 170 mph. And the PDK actually provides better fuel economy than the manual-20 mpg city, 29 highway. The Boxster is a lean, lightweight sports car and offers what is among the best steering response and handling of any vehicle. The firm suspension tuning, strong 4-wheel anti-lock brakes with cross-drilled rotors and sophisticated Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system-tuned to provide safety and also allow safe handling near the limits-altogether bring a very engaging driving experience. Thanks to a mid-engine layout, the Boxster's cargo compartments is split into two: one at the front of the car and another in back. Added up, at 14.5 cubic feet, the total is more than many small sedans. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is optional on the Boxster; offering Normal and Sport damper settings. Those seeking the best compromise between performance and comfort in the Boxster will want to go with the available Sports Chrono Package for the Boxster S. It includes launch control, for the fastest possible acceleration, allowing 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes are also available for superior high-speed use or repeated track use. The Porsche Boxster Spyder-most easily identified by its two humps just behind the two seating positions-is a new variant of the Boxster focused for the track. It shaves off precious pounds by offering a removable canvas top instead of the standard Boxster's convenient power soft top; air conditioning is optional on the Spyder and a CD sound system is optional at no cost. A number of interior trim changes have also been made. The Spyder comes only in Boxster S form, with the 320-hp, 3.4L engine. It's capable of reaching 60 mpg in as little as 4.6 seconds, according to Porsche, and it actually gets slightly better fuel economy, at 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway. Boxster options include a heated steering wheel, bi-xenon headlamps, adaptive sport seats, racing-style Sports Bucket seats or a seat ventilation system with seat heating. A navigation system is on offer and Porsche Communication Management brings a 6.5-inch touch screen along with connectivity for Bluetooth phones, iPods or memory sticks. Premium sound includes nine speakers, but there's also a Bose surround sound system that has ten speakers.
